IBM has announced a beta connection between its Digital Asset Haven platform and SWIFT’s shared ledger, designed to facilitate the movement of tokenized deposits. The integration utilizes an ISO 20022 Messaging Adapter, allowing participating financial institutions to instruct ledger transactions using standard, familiar payment messages.
This development brings IBM’s digital-asset infrastructure into SWIFT’s existing tokenization initiative. By mapping standard ISO 20022 payment instructions to transactions on SWIFT’s permissioned ledger, banks can test transfers of bank-issued tokenized deposits without overhauling their legacy messaging systems. The adapter operates alongside Haven’s built-in digital-asset controls, wallet management, key management, and Hyperledger Besu connectivity.
Notably, the integration enables participating clients to move digital assets around the clock. While final settlement will still rely on traditional real-time gross settlement (RTGS) systems, the ledger allows value transfer instructions to be executed ahead of the final settlement step, supporting continuous banking operations.
In addition to the SWIFT connection, IBM introduced a separate on-premises beta for Digital Asset Haven. This option allows institutions to run the platform entirely within their own data centers on IBM Z and LinuxONE, eliminating dependency on public cloud services. This on-premises deployment keeps both the solution and key-management layers within the client’s secure environment, providing regulated entities with direct control over their custody and transaction infrastructure.
Tom McPherson, general manager of IBM Z and LinuxONE, noted that these dual pathways allow regulated institutions to explore digital-asset networks while maintaining strict operational control. SWIFT previously announced in July that its ledger was ready for initial use, with 17 banks preparing to pilot live tokenized-deposit transactions. IBM’s integration adds a key infrastructure option to this expanding pilot program.
