Somkid Pheuk-ngam, a 67-year-old resident near a canal north of central Bangkok, told AFP: “The water keeps rising. It’s difficult to leave now—it has reached waist level.”
“I cannot go anywhere. I have had to keep my shop closed for two days.”
She said water levels in the city appear worse than during the 2011 nationwide flooding, which killed hundreds across Thailand over three months. So far, no deaths have been reported in Bangkok from the current flooding.
The Thai Meteorological Service has forecast continued heavy rain through the week, though the low-pressure system causing recent downpours is expected to move toward central Thailand.
