Militant Car Bomb Rock Pakistani Police Checkpoint, Killing at Least 11 in Escalating Region Violence

A suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle at a roadside police checkpoint in northwestern Pakistan on Saturday, killing at least 11 people and wounding approximately 30 others, officials said, highlighting a resurgence of militant violence in the region bordering Afghanistan.

The attack took place in Dera Ismail Khan, a district within Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to Bilal Faizi, a spokesman for the provincial emergency service. Local police chief Safdar Baloch reported that the majority of those killed and injured were security personnel and civilians passing by the checkpoint.

The Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), claimed responsibility for the assault in an official statement. In recent years, Pakistan has witnessed a marked increase in militant attacks, many of which have been attributed to the TTP and the proscribed Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist organization primarily operating in the neighboring Balochistan province.

The TTP operates independently from, yet maintains close ties with, the Afghan Taliban, which seized control of Afghanistan in 2021 following the withdrawal of international forces.
