He described the June Pakistan‑mediated MoU as a fair and honest deal during a press conference on the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York, questioning why the agreement, signed at the highest diplomatic level and concluded through an informed process, should not be revived. The US‑Iran conflict that erupted in February has strained energy markets, as Tehran has closed the critical Strait of Hormuz and the Houthi militia, backed by Iran, has continued attacks on Red Sea shipping lanes. President Trump turned down the Iranian proposal shortly after Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi unveiled it on Friday at the United Nations in New York. While the proposal’s details remain undisclosed, reports indicate it calls for a pause in regional hostilities and the release of roughly $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets. The plan also proposes lifting sanctions on Iran’s oil sector and ending the United States naval blockade of its ports. Araghchi noted that Qatari mediators delivered the proposal to Washington, which he said would require specific actions from the United States.
