Footage showing 87‑year‑old Maricarmen Abascal being carried from her Madrid apartment on a stretcher after police forcibly entered her home has reignited debate over Spain’s housing crisis, just months before the 2027 general election.
Demonstrators rattled keys, blew whistles, chanted slogans and displayed banners urging policies to curb soaring housing costs and make evictions harder to execute, as they marched through central Madrid.
One banner carried the warning, “You could be the next Maricarmen.”
