Netanyahu Slams Opposition Alliance Formed to Challenge His Rule in Upcoming Knesset Vote

Five opposition party leaders agree to coordinate strategy and maximize voter turnout ahead of the October 27 parliamentary elections.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has lashed out at opposition leaders who have begun coordinating efforts to unseat his government ahead of the October 27 Knesset elections.

The five politicians convened at opposition leader Yair Lapid’s residence in Tel Aviv on Saturday to align their electoral strategy, according to Israel’s Channel 12.

In his first public response to the pact, Netanyahu alleged that Yashar party leader Gadi Eisenkot would attempt to form a coalition with Lapid, Yair Golan, Naftali Bennett’s new party, Avigdor Lieberman’s Yisrael Beiteinu, and Arab factions.

“Only a strong Likud will stop them,” Netanyahu posted on X, referencing his right-wing party. He accompanied the message with an AI-generated image that inserted United Arab List leader Mansour Abbas and Hadash-Ta’al leader Ahmad Tibi into a photograph of the opposition meeting.

The gathering included Lapid, head of Yesh Atid; former premier Naftali Bennett, leader of the newly formed Bennett 2026; Avigdor Lieberman, chairman of Yisrael Beiteinu; Gadi Eisenkot, who heads the Yashar party; and Yair Golan, leader of The Democrats.

Lapid shared a group photograph and a document outlining their agreed principles for cooperation through the election and beyond. Under the accord, each party leader committed to mobilizing their respective constituencies to increase voter participation and broaden support across Israeli society, with the goal of securing a parliamentary majority and forming a new government.

The agreement also mandates the establishment of three joint working groups within 48 hours. The first will focus on driving turnout for the bloc and what the leaders termed “safeguarding the integrity of the election.” A second group will draft foundational guidelines for a prospective opposition government, including the creation of an official commission of inquiry into the October 7, 2023 attacks and the drafting of a new constitution. The third will coordinate media strategy and combat what the document described as “fake news and smear campaigns.”

“I am filled with hope again tonight. I am confident that we can win 63 seats and work together to fix Israel,” Bennett wrote in a statement on X.

“We have agreed to fully cooperate until the election, on election day, and after the election, with the aim of forming a government that will fix Israel,” he added.
