The United Nations bears a responsibility to confront violence and conflict worldwide, including those in the Middle East and North Africa, Tunisia’s foreign minister declared during the UN General Assembly meeting on Saturday.
Mohamed Ali Nafti, Tunisia’s minister responsible for foreign affairs, migration and citizens abroad, singled out the need for an end to Israel’s aggression and its characterization as genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.
“For Tunisia, the United Nations is the home of international legitimacy—a space that embodies the hopes and aspirations of future generations for a fairer, more equitable global order—and a unique forum for shaping practical solutions that achieve peace, security, and comprehensive, sustainable development in line with the UN 2030 agenda,” Nafti stated.
He further demanded an end to hostilities in Lebanon, Syria, Sudan, Libya and Yemen, condemning Israel’s role in numerous regional disputes. He insisted that achieving peace rests on the shared responsibility of all UN member states.
Drawing on long‑standing active participation in UN peacekeeping operations, Tunisia asserted that strengthening these missions requires investment in human and institutional capacity and enhanced civil protection as a collective obligation and humanitarian imperative.
Nafti also emphasized Tunisia’s commitment to elevating women’s roles in public life and decision‑making, stressing the fight against all forms of gender‑based violence and noting that women’s empowerment is a key driver of development and stability. Likewise, Tunisia places youth at the centre of its national priorities, working to empower them politically, economically and socially while encouraging their initiatives and participation in public affairs and decision‑making. Nafti reiterated Tunisia’s dedication to defend human rights, safeguard democracy and protect the freedoms of citizens, reaffirming the country’s commitment to economic, climate‑related, social, scientific, cultural and educational rights, placing the fundamental right to development ahead of all.Also Read
