Category 3 Hurricane Polo Approaches Mexico’s Pacific Coast

Communities along Mexico’s northern Pacific coast are preparing for Hurricane Polo, which is expected to make landfall Monday night or early Tuesday.

The Category 3 system, packing maximum sustained winds of 115 mph (185 km/h), is forecast to traverse Baja California Sur, a tourist region that includes the resort destination of Los Cabos.

The US National Hurricane Center has issued warnings for heavy rainfall that could trigger life-threatening flooding and mudslides, particularly in areas with steep terrain.

Residents spent Sunday stocking up on essentials such as drinking water and food as the storm drew nearer.

The NHC also cautioned about a dangerous storm surge accompanied by large, destructive waves.

Authorities in Cabo San Lucas, known for its iconic natural rock arch, have restricted beach access, and several restaurants have closed in the town, a hub for sport fishing and whale watching.
