Asian Games 2026 Cricket Final: Dual Gold Awarded for Washed-Out Match

A recent rule update for the Asian Games 2026 stipulates that should the men’s cricket final be entirely washed out, both finalist teams will be awarded gold medals. This differs from the previous rule where only the higher-seeded team would receive gold. The final is set for October 3 at Kōrogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan, with cricket events taking place from September 23.

At the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, a washed-out final would have awarded gold to the higher-seeded team and silver to the runners-up. This rule was applied in 2023, giving India the gold medal and Afghanistan silver after the match was abandoned with Afghanistan at 112 for 5 in 18.2 overs, while India had not yet batted.

For the upcoming Asian Games 2026, the regulations have been revised so that a completely washed-out final will result in two gold medals being awarded. India, captained by Shreyas Iyer and entering the tournament as the top seed, advanced to the semifinals when their quarterfinal against Afghanistan was washed out on September 28, 2026. Similarly, Pakistan reached the semifinals on the same day after their quarterfinal match against Hong Kong, China was abandoned due to weather.

What Constitutes a Completed Match Under Current Rules?

A match is deemed complete only when both teams have faced at least five overs each. If fewer than five overs are bowled per side, the match is declared a no-result. Under the 2026 regulations for the final, such a scenario results in both teams being awarded gold medals.

However, if the team batting second has completed at least five overs and rain interrupts play thereafter, the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method is used to determine a winner. In such cases, a result is achievable and only one team receives the gold medal. Consequently, the dual gold award applies exclusively when the match fails to reach the five-over minimum for both teams.

In earlier rounds of the tournament, a washed-out match results in advancement for the higher-seeded team, with seeding determined by the ICC T20I rankings at the tournament entry deadline. India’s position as the top seed ensured their automatic progression to the semifinals when their quarterfinal against Afghanistan was abandoned on September 28.

This rule change specifically alters the outcome for the final match, differing from the 2023 procedure. Should a similar washout occur in the October 3 final at Nisshin, both finalist teams will share the gold medal, as opposed to the higher-seeded team claiming sole victory. It is important to note that this adjustment applies solely to the final; washouts in earlier rounds continue to be decided based on team seeding.
