Lupita Nyong’o has addressed online criticism regarding her portrayal of Helen of Troy in Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic.
The film features an ensemble cast, with Matt Damon in the lead role of Odysseus, and Nyong’o embodying both Helen—the catalyst for the Trojan War—and her sister Clytemnestra.
Released on July 17, the project has drawn polarized reactions, notably from Elon Musk, who criticized Nolan for hiring a Black actor to depict Helen, labeling it “anti-white racism.”
In an interview with Elle, Nyong’o rejected the divisive framing, emphasizing that the story is mythological and not bound by modern racial interpretations. “I’m not investing energy in defending it,” she stated. “The cast reflects the world, and the story lives within its own context.”
“Participating in The Odyssey is a profound experience—it’s a universal narrative spanning eras,” she added. “Our diverse cast mirrors this scale. Chris Nolan’s direction was collaboratively empowering; he trusted our input on everything from character development to stylistic choices.”
The ensemble includes Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and others. Nolan’s choice to cast Travis Scott aims to link the poem’s oral tradition to modern rap culture.
Notably, the film’s runtime is shorter than Nolan’s prior work, Oppenheimer, signaling a streamlined approach to storytelling.”
