Live cattle futures closed mixed on Tuesday, with front-month contracts declining 60 to 87 cents while deferred months advanced 27 to 52 cents. Cash trade remained quiet for the week following limited activity last week, when Southern Plains trade opened at $181—down $2 week-over-week—while Northern sales were light at $180-183, according to USDA data.
Feeder cattle futures were mostly higher, rising 15 to 75 cents, though the March 2025 contract edged lower by a tick. The CME Feeder Cattle Index slipped 93 cents to $242.99 as of September 9. Monday’s OKC Feeder Cattle Auction moved 10,154 head, exceeding the prior sale but falling short of the 10,556 head traded a year earlier. Feeder steers dropped $1-5, while steer and heifer calves declined $5-10.
USDA’s Tuesday afternoon report showed lower wholesale boxed beef prices. Choice boxes fell 29 cents to $308.23, while Select dropped $1.47 to $297.01, widening the Choice/Select spread to $11.22. Federally inspected cattle slaughter was estimated at 124,000 head for Tuesday, bringing the weekly total to 238,000—well above the prior holiday-shortened week but 11,225 head below the same period last year.
