The growing alignment between distributed ledger technology (DLT) and SWIFT’s ISO 20022 global messaging standard has brought XRP back into the spotlight. Ripple’s native token is architected for native compliance with this gold standard, giving it a distinct status compared to alternatives such as Stellar (XLM) or Hedera (HBAR).
ISO 20022 Rollout Bolsters XRP’s Case
ISO 20022 is an established international standard for financial messaging that enables richer data and faster cross-border transactions. An article from ‘nocash’ Magazine illustrates a scenario where XRP serves as a bridge currency and complementary liquidity provider via On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) alongside central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) in centralized payment systems.
This XRP-powered technology allows major banks to seamlessly swap between XRP and local currencies, addressing the immediate cross-border payment challenges for SWIFT-compliant institutions and enabling Ripple’s tech stack to penetrate corporate corridors worldwide. The key question remains how much of SWIFT’s volume XRP can capture.
Remember when Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse said: „XRP could capture 14% of Swift volume in 5 years!”

Ripple’s CEO once projected a 14% capture of SWIFT’s $155 trillion annualized trading volume. Meanwhile, Ripple’s acquisition of GTreasury processed $13 trillion in transfers last year without using digital assets, though that gap may narrow this year. SWIFT’s ISO 20022 requirements mandate all banks to adopt the new standard by year-end.
XRP Gaining Edge Over Bitcoin on Compliance Grounds?
This shift could bring more traditional cross-chain transactions on-chain. However, blockchain researcher SMQKE suggests the transition could erode Bitcoin’s (BTC) market dominance if the leading asset falls short of XRP’s global compliance standards.
ISO 20022 MAY CUT THE KNEES OFF BITCOIN WHILE BENEFITTING XRP
“However, one crypto that could benefit is XRP, the currency used on the blockchain-based payment system Ripple.

Not all observers agree. Analyst Macro Bombastic countered that “Bitcoin doesn’t need ISO 20022 to keep doing its thing,” a valid point given Bitcoin’s consistently leading daily trading volumes in the tens of billions.
Nevertheless, being mentioned alongside CBDCs elevates XRP to a new tier. With nearly 80% of countries reportedly exploring their own digital currencies, XRP’s ability to participate in the same cross-border settlement infrastructure presents a significant advantage.
The article cited by SMQKE makes clear that ISO 20022 serves as a decisive test for how traditional finance institutions adapt to new technology. Ripple’s XRP occupies a unique position in the SWIFT puzzle due to its native alignment with the standard’s code.
