Britain’s government announced Wednesday the cancellation of a joint UK-France pilot programme designed to reduce migrant crossings of the English Channel via small boats.
The Home Office confirmed in a statement that the “one-for-one” arrangement is no longer accepting new cases.
The proposed scheme would have detained and returned Channel arrivals to France, matched by an equivalent number of asylum seekers entering the UK through legal and safe pathways.
Under the agreement, approximately 1,500 migrants were repatriated to France, with slightly fewer relocated to the UK. The initiative was originally slated for a three-year term, featuring an early termination clause.
