Aurora Innovation, a Pittsburgh‑based autonomous trucking company, has launched a commercial driverless freight service and is already generating revenue. The firm plans to scale rapidly, targeting 200 trucks by the end of 2026, 1,000 by the end of 2027, and over 30,000 by 2030, with projected annual revenue exceeding $5 billion and gross margins around 60%. It has logged more than 500,000 driverless miles and currently hauls freight for customers such as McLane and Werner. Starting in 2027, Aurora will shift from a Transportation‑as‑a‑Service model to a Driver‑as‑a‑Service model, allowing fleet operators to own the trucks while paying Aurora for its autonomous‑driving technology, which reduces capital requirements and supports accelerated growth. Despite a recent share decline of roughly 17% after its investor day, the stock presents an asymmetric investment opportunity with potential upside of 300‑400%, according to analysts, though it carries risks including significant cash burn and the need for additional capital raises.
