Arsenal and Manchester United have been notified of Jules Koundé’s potential availability, as Barcelona indicate willingness to sell the France international in 2027.
The 27-year-old has fallen out of favour under Hansi Flick this season, despite being a dependable defender for the club previously.
His versatility across right-back and centre-back makes him an intriguing option for Premier League sides seeking tactical flexibility.
Arsenal and Man United on alert for Koundé
TEAMtalk reports that both Arsenal and Manchester United have been alerted to Koundé’s situation, with Chelsea also monitoring him and Bayern Munich interested.
Barcelona are reportedly ready to entertain a January transfer after Koundé started just one La Liga match. His diminished role comes despite a contract extension to 2030, with the club’s announcement earlier calling him a key figure under Flick.
Arsenal’s interest is not new. TEAMtalk revealed that Barcelona sounded out major European clubs over the summer, with a fee above €50m and high wages expected.
Man United were also approached, but their priority then was left-back rather than another right-sided defender.
Premier League Fit: Where Could Koundé Land?
For Arsenal, the appeal is clear. Mikel Arteta values defenders who can switch positions and contribute to build-up play. Koundé’s experience at centre-back and right-back offers another high-quality option at the back, especially during busy periods.
United’s situation differs. Their January focus is likely broader defensive rebuild, so Koundé could be relevant if they decide to prioritise an experienced right-sided defender over left-back.
Age is a factor. At 27, Koundé should have several prime seasons remaining, so this would be a purchase for immediate impact rather than development.
The main hurdle is financial. A fee over €50m plus significant wages would need either club to see him as a starter, not just depth.
However, if Barcelona are serious about generating funds and Koundé remains outside Flick’s plans, January could present a rare window for both clubs.
