Global leaders gathered at United Nations headquarters in New York for a key private sector forum, where Chris Diaz, a prominent business leader based in Nairobi, Kenya, argued that the future of the global community depends on how nations and industries address today’s most pressing challenges.
“Our future will be shaped by how we harness immense opportunities for economic growth across Africa and foster stronger international trade connections with global markets,” Diaz stated during the Leaders’ Summit and UN roundtable meetings held on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York.
Speaking as an influential voice in the international business community, Diaz expressed strong confidence in the transformative power of private sector investment. He highlighted its potential to address interconnected global commerce, support sustainable projects, enhance food security, and accelerate the integration of cutting-edge technological solutions into business investments.
Diaz emphasized that private sector leaders are poised to drive investment, pioneer new technologies, and boost global GDP, with a critical focus on integrating Africa’s business growth into new global markets. He noted that private sector business investment fosters new employment, entrepreneurship, and development, while promoting green business, greater sustainability, gender diversity, and poverty reduction by enhancing intra-African trade, international trade, manufacturing, and globalization.
Diaz specifically highlighted the aviation sector, describing it as both a vital driver of global connectivity that generates widespread prosperity and a critical battleground in the fight against climate change. He pointed out that the transport sector contributes trillions of dollars to global GDP annually and supports hundreds of millions of jobs worldwide.
“We must decarbonize and reduce emissions by over 60 percent through the use of sustainable aviation fuels and alternative cleaner energy sources,” Diaz stressed. He noted that the transport industry is expanding rapidly, emphasizing that aviation and ground infrastructure must grow quickly to accommodate the forecasted increase in commercial aircraft from 20,000 to over 40,000 within the next decade.
He explained that this expansion will bring larger cargo volumes, increased passenger traffic, stronger global economic momentum, and additional jobs. However, he stressed that this growth must be paired with bold environmental measures to achieve net-zero targets. Diaz cited projections indicating that Africa and the Middle East are poised for the fastest regional business expansion, integrating more people and goods into global markets than ever before.
While Diaz acknowledged that serious global challenges persist—including war, inequality, climate change, food insecurity, and the need for greater technology investment—his overarching message at the UN private sector leaders session and investors forum focused on the immense opportunity of channeling global capital into African markets. He argued that with the right regional investments, policies, and partnerships, the private sector can act as a powerful engine for a more sustainable, inclusive, and prosperous world.
Private sector leaders globally pointed to a growing consensus: tackling global challenges requires collaboration among governments, investors, industry leaders, and international institutions. They asserted that the private sector is ready to support and lead the way through new investment partnerships.
