Captain Shai Hope remained unbeaten on 162 as West Indies carved out a record run-chase victory over India in one-day international cricket in Chandigarh.
West Indies achieved their highest-ever ODI chase on Saturday, reaching 352-5 to win by five wickets with 10 balls remaining, after India posted 351-7 led by Lokesh Rahul’s unbeaten 129.
India had already sealed the three-match series with eight-wicket victories in Thiruvananthapuram and Guwahati. However, West Indies — chasing for the first time in the series — overcame India for the first time since 2023.
Hope promoted himself to opener after Jewel Andrew reportedly injured a finger while taking a catch and required hospital treatment. After keeping wicket through India’s entire 50 overs in humid conditions, Hope batted brilliantly to register his second successive century in the series, though he found movement in the closing overs.
He struck the winning run. “Felt something around the groin area but wanted to fight through till the end,” Hope said.
His second-highest ODI score, compiled off 143 balls, featured 17 boundaries and three sixes. Amir Jangoo contributed 67 off 56 and Keemo Paul added 44 off 35.
“[Chasing is] always a lot easier in India, especially with the dew,” Hope said. “Glad we got over the line.”
Hope and Jangoo put on 109 off 99 balls for the second wicket against an India attack that brought back Mohammed Siraj and all-rounder Nitish Reddy, along with debutant pacer Anshul Kamboj, who went wicketless.
Jangoo was run out in the 21st over, but Sherfane Rutherford (24) held firm, adding 56 with Hope, who reached 50 off 46 balls and his 100 off 104 — his 21st ODI hundred and fifth against India.
Paul’s cameo included five fours as he added 65 off 61 balls alongside his skipper. Hope accelerated after Paul was dismissed in the 41st over, caught off Gurnoor Brar.
Hope smashed seven more fours and two sixes after his milestone, racing through 62 off the final 39 balls to steer West Indies to victory.
India were penalized with a slow over-rate, serving four extra minutes and an additional fielder inside the 30-yard circle, as Hope and Gudakesh Motie (19 not out) added 62 off 29 balls for the sixth wicket.
India won the toss again but skipper Shubman Gill was caught behind for 1 and Virat Kohli bowled for a golden duck — both dismissed by Jayden Seales.
Only 28 runs came in the opening 10 overs before Rohit Sharma and Rahul steadied the innings.
Sharma recovered with 92 off 85 balls, putting on 137 for the third wicket with Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Sharma took his time and was unfortunate to fall short of a second successive hundred in the series; he was caught off Paul in the 25th over.
Four overs later, Gaikwad — 57 off 69 — fell to Seales for his third wicket.
Rahul then took control, leading the charge past 350. He hit six sixes and 10 fours, reaching 50 off 41 balls and his second fifty off 39 balls. He enjoyed productive partnerships with Naman Dhir and Brar, finishing 129 not out off 87 balls.
The teams begin a five-match Twenty20 series on Tuesday, starting in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
