A recent Instagram promo from Devin Haney has reintroduced the possibility of a lucrative showdown against Shakur Stevenson, landing at a time when Haney is nearing a twelve-month absence from the ring. A bout against Stevenson would provide Haney with a recognizable name, a favorable matchup, and a pathway to reclaim public attention following an extended layoff.
Haney posted footage depicting him square up against Stevenson, stirring fresh speculation without confirming that negotiations have officially restarted. Although Haney’s camp previously appeared open to stepping down to 144 pounds, the deal never came together. Should discussions resume, both camps must resolve whether Haney remains willing to compete at that catchweight.

Weight remains the primary sticking point. Haney would arguably prefer 147 pounds, allowing him to face the smaller Stevenson without an additional cut. Stevenson had previously advocated for 144 pounds; accepting that would require Haney to shed three pounds, though it remains unclear whether that extra reduction would compromise his performance.
Stylistically, Haney’s jab and reach advantage could allow him to defeat Stevenson without needing to chase him down. Haney can dictate the range from the outside, forcing Stevenson to come forward to land punches. Since both fighters prefer their opponents to initiate the action, the contest could turn cautious with limited exchanges. Consistency with the jab may ultimately decide the close rounds.
Haney must also capitalize on his victory over Brian Norman Jr. last November. Nearly eleven months have elapsed since he captured the WBO welterweight title. Passing the November 22 mark without a confirmed opponent consumes a full year of his prime. Such a layoff squanders earning potential, stalls in-ring development, and erodes fan interest.
Should Stevenson remain occupied with Gary Antuanne Russell, viable alternatives exist near 147 pounds. Richardson Hitchins, Liam Paro, Lewis Crocker, Teofimo Lopez, Jack Catterall, and Arnold Barboza Jr. all offer credible matchups, provided schedules align. While Haney has several directions to pursue, he cannot afford another month passing without securing a date.
Stevenson can alternatively pursue another title at 140 pounds against Russell or revisit what could be a larger payday against Haney. The Haney bout would necessitate moving up in weight against a larger opponent, making the catchweight agreement a central element of any renewed negotiations.
