Hardik Pandya‘s highly anticipated return to competitive cricket has suffered yet another setback. The Baroda all-rounder has been ruled out of the upcoming India A one-day series against Australia A, which is scheduled to begin next week.
Pandya had originally been named in the India A squad for the three-match unofficial ODI series, but his inclusion was pending fitness clearance. This latest injury setback will further delay his return to competitive cricket.
The three India A versus Australia A one-day matches are slated to take place in Puducherry on October 6, 9, and 11, with Ruturaj Gaikwad set to captain the Indian side.
Hardik Pandya suffers fresh injury setback
Pandya’s comeback had been closely monitored after he was initially selected for the India A squad last month. The primary objective of the assignment was to help the experienced all-rounder regain match fitness ahead of a potential return to the senior Indian squad.
However, the 32-year-old experienced discomfort in his right calf last month. A subsequent MRI scan revealed mild intramedullary oedema, with the injury characterized as right medial tibial stress syndrome.
This latest setback represents another frustrating chapter in Pandya’s rehabilitation process. After spending considerable time recovering from previous injuries, his comeback has now been delayed once again.
For the Indian team, managing Pandya’s recovery carefully is crucial given his value as a seam-bowling all-rounder. Rather than rushing his return, the team management is expected to prioritize his long-term fitness and well-being.
Who has replaced Hardik Pandya in the India A squad?
Due to Pandya’s unavailability, Suryansh Shedge has been drafted into the India A squad.
The 23-year-old Mumbai all-rounder is no stranger to the Indian cricket setup. Shedge made his international debut during India’s T20I tour of Ireland in June and subsequently featured in T20I series against England and Zimbabwe.
He also impressed during the India A 50-over tri-series in Sri Lanka, scoring 147 runs in five matches while also contributing with the ball. His all-round capabilities make him a logical and capable replacement for Pandya in the A side.
Shedge’s inclusion also comes shortly after his own recovery from a recent injury setback. He had been recovering from a quadriceps injury at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru before being cleared to join the India A squad.
His return to the squad provides him with another valuable opportunity to make a strong impression and bolster his credentials as a promising seam-bowling all-rounder.
