Israel’s national football team donned black armbands in their Nations League clash against Ireland on Sunday to commemorate the victims of Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack, echoing a similar gesture adopted by the visiting Irish side to protest the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The minimalistic black armbands bore the inscription “7.10,” marking the date of the catastrophic assault.
The shift occurs shortly after the teams met in a near-empty Serbian venue, featuring Irish players lowering their heads during Israel’s anthem and failing to extend a handshaker over the Israeli military campaign in Gaza.
The Israeli Football Association confirmed Sunday that the initiative had received formal authorization from UEFA before facing Ireland in Backa Topola.
The offensive attributed to Hamas represents the deadliest conflict in modern Israeli history, a blow that claimed over 1,221 lives according to AFP tallying using official Israeli statistics.
In retaliation, Israel has launched a massive offensive, reducing much of Gaza to rubble and adding to the tallest humanitarian tolls reported by Hamas-controlled governance bodies recognized by the United Nations.

Head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson drew diplomatic fire for calling the opponent “genocide,” stating, “We’re not playing with genocide; we’re playing against genocide. We’re playing against Israel, we’re not playing with Israel.”
The Israeli association labeled his remarks as demonstrating “stupidity, ignorance and hypocrisy.”
