A mixture of relief and joy filled Elfyn Evans after securing his maiden World Rally Championship title at the conclusion of Rally Sardinia, marking Britain’s first WRC crown in 25 years. The Toyota Gazoo Racing driver navigated a tense season where momentum shifted dramatically, particularly after a late-stage puncture in Chile threatened his championship ambitions. Despite overcoming adversity, Evans knew a direct showdown with Oliver Solberg was required to clinch the crown.
The final stage delivered shockwaves when Solberg, who entered the weekend trailing by 21 points, encountered misfortune two corners from the finish, inadvertently handing the title to Evans in a twist few could have predicted.
“It’s a mix of relief, happiness, and joy,” Evans said of his emotional triumph. “It’s a bit surreal, honestly. There were so many ups and downs. I wasn’t confident about my run in the Power Stage, but anything can happen in this sport.” He acknowledged lingering self-criticism over his performance in the final event but emphasized the culmination of years of dedicated effort. “I’ve put a lot into this, and maybe my talent alone isn’t as high as others. But I give everything, and finally, it paid off.”
Co-driver Scott Martin celebrated England’s first WRC co-drivers’ championship alongside his native Wales hero. “It’s been a long time coming,” Martin said. “When we saw Solberg and Elliott Edmondson push hard on the final stage, I thought it might slip away again. It hasn’t sunk in yet—I’m still in a bit of a daze.”
Reactions from the rally community underscored Evans’ perseverance. Nine-time WRC legend Sébastien Ogier, his Toyota teammate and former champion, praised Evans’ resilience: “He’s had a tough year and deserves this more than anyone. Years of hard work made this win inevitable.” Similarly, 2024 champion Thierry Neuville highlighted Evans’ tenacity despite repeated near-misses: “He’s been so close in so many seasons, and this one was earned through sheer determination.”
