Twelve years after its debut, this survival horror video game series has spawned countless fan creations and several screen adaptations. Its initial rise to fame came via popular YouTubers, and the franchise followed up with three full sequels released within a single year. That rapid release schedule earned it a Guinness World Record for the most video game sequels launched in one year, with the four main titles arriving between August 2014 and July 2015.
Despite its popularity, critical reception has been mixed. Reviewers have lauded the narrative and atmosphere, but have taken issue with the gameplay. Still, the series has achieved strong worldwide sales and built a devoted fan base. Each entry places a night watchman or similar protagonist in a series of levels, tasking them with surviving from midnight to 6 a.m. while defending against murderous animatronic characters, with every installment set in a new locale.
Five Nights at Freddy’s remains one of the most influential indie franchises in gaming. The film adaptations—released in 2023 and 2025—performed well at the box office, yet critics generally gave them unfavorable reviews. Viewers who missed the theatrical debut of the first film can now watch it at no cost on the ad‑supported platform Fandango at Home Free, where it has been available since October 1 as part of the service’s Halloween lineup.
‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ Is a Profitable Horror Video Game Adaptation
Directed by Emma Tammi and written by franchise creator Scott Cawthon, alongside Tammi and Seth Cuddeback, Five Nights at Freddy’s earned $137.3 million in North America and $159.9 million elsewhere, for a worldwide total of $297.2 million on a $20 million budget. It became Blumhouse‘s highest‑grossing film until it was overtaken by Curry Barker’s 2025 hit Obsession. Its financial success led to the sequel, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, based on the second video game, with most of the crew and the main cast returning. The first film stars Josh Hutcherson and Matthew Lillard with Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, and Mary Stuart Masterson in supporting roles. A third film is currently in development.
Five Nights at Freddy’s is available to stream at no cost on Fandango.
