New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announced on Monday that Michael Bracewell will transition to a casual contract for the 2026-27 season, allowing him to pursue an opportunity in the Big Bash League (BBL). Nick Kelly will take his spot on the central contract list, marking the top-order batter’s first national contract 11 years after his first-class debut.
Bracewell joins Finn Allen, Mark Chapman, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne, and Tim Seifert as part of the casually contracted players group for the upcoming season.
“The support from New Zealand Cricket to allow me to take this opportunity at this stage of my career means a great deal,” said the 35-year-old Bracewell. “As a white-ball specialist, this felt like an opportunity too significant to overlook. I remain fully committed to the BLACKCAPS and look forward to joining the team for the upcoming tour of India and future white-ball series.”
“I also have my eyes firmly fixed on the opportunity to be involved in the inaugural NZ20 tournament, set to launch next summer.”
Kelly, 33, who made his international debut for New Zealand in March 2025, has earned 15 caps, including two appearances as T20I captain, stepping in for the injured Tom Latham during the series in Bangladesh earlier this year.
“Nick has consistently stood out in domestic cricket over several seasons, and earning his first central contract at this stage of his career is a testament to his hard work and dedication,” said New Zealand head coach Rob Walter, who previously coached Kelly for two seasons at Otago.
“Introducing players like Nick to international cricket a bit later certainly has its advantages, as they tend to possess a deep understanding of their game and the confidence to perform under pressure.”
Walter highlighted Kelly’s recent form, noting that the batter earned his opportunity through strong performances against Bangladesh and the West Indies, often under challenging batting conditions. “With over 300 professional matches to his name, Nick brings a wealth of experience to the group. Furthermore, he is recognized as one of the premier fielders in the country, adding significant value to our contracted squad,” Walter added.
