ISTANBUL — A 15-year-old girl stabbed eight pupils at a middle school in Istanbul’s Başakşehir district on Tuesday, leaving one student dead and seven others wounded, according to the Interior Ministry.
The attack occurred around 8:40 a.m. local time (0540 GMT). The suspect, a 10th-grade student from a different high school in the same neighborhood, entered the premises wearing a school uniform and began stabbing children indiscriminately, Istanbul Governor Davut Gül told reporters.
“One of the students receiving treatment … died despite all medical efforts to save her. Treatment is continuing for the seven other wounded students,” the ministry said in a statement on X.
Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu earlier reported that among the eight injured girls — middle school students typically aged 10 to 14 — one was in critical condition and two were in moderate-to-serious condition.
Başakşehir District Governor Cemil Özgür Öneği confirmed the attacker was a high school student. Police have detained the suspect.
The incident follows a series of school attacks in Türkiye. Last month, a teenager opened fire outside a school in western Türkiye, wounding 11 pupils, three seriously. In April, two separate shooting attacks by teenagers on consecutive days in southern Türkiye sparked widespread concern about school security.
