Omaha-born, New York-based indie rocker Anna McClellan has had a dynamic year, releasing her album Space, you big cloud on Father/Daughter and lending her vocals to Greg Freeman’s record All Set The Bone. Now, she prepares to usher in a new chapter with her upcoming EP, South Of Dodge, marking her first release for the acclaimed label Exploding In Sound. The title is a deeply personal nod to the major street that divides her hometown of Omaha in half.
The journey of South Of Dodge spans several years of creative transition. McClellan and collaborator Adam Roberts initially began tracking the songs while McClellan was still residing in Omaha, returning to the tapes recently to refine them in her current home of New York City. The EP opens with “Drank Earlier,” a raw, introspective track navigating the complexities of addiction. McClellan offers a candid perspective on the song’s genesis:
“Drank Earlier” is about my addiction to the pain of being in love. It’s also about my addiction to drinking and the way the two worked in cahoots to keep me in a cycle of self-harm and immediate gratification. I wrote it in 2023 and didn’t finally stop drinking until early this year, January 25, 2026. I knew at the time I was perpetuating a cycle, I name that in the song, but it still took me a few years to break it.
