JEDDAH: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s targeted fuel subsidy initiative has eased the burden on low‑income segments affected by rising fuel costs stemming from Middle‑East tensions. Mohammad Irfan, the consul for press and culture at the Pakistan Consulate in Jeddah, noted that escalating global oil prices, driven by the regional situation, have impacted fuel‑import dependent nations such as Pakistan.
Under the special relief scheme, eligible owners of motorcycles, rickshaws and small cars—particularly those whose livelihood depends on transport—are receiving petrol at reduced rates. To participate, citizens must register on a dedicated digital platform. Once their information is verified, they obtain a digital token containing personal and vehicle details.
The program, overseen directly by the prime minister, contributes to the nation’s economic digitization by building a secure digital database of low‑ and middle‑income residents.
To increase awareness, Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting launched a nationwide outreach campaign across television, radio, print and digital channels, explaining how qualified individuals can access the subsidy.
Irfan added that the relief effort has garnered domestic praise and attracted interest from policymakers abroad.
