Mikel Arteta has signed a contract extension with Arsenal, securing his commitment to the club through the end of the 2029-30 season. The deal is believed to position the Spaniard as the highest-paid manager in the Premier League, providing Arsenal with what chief executive Richard Garlick describes as a distinct competitive advantage.
If Arteta completes the full term of this new agreement, he will rank as the third longest-serving manager in Arsenal’s history, behind only Arsene Wenger and George Allison. On a broader level, he would become the fourth-longest-serving manager among all top-flight clubs since the Premier League’s inception in 1992, trailing only David Moyes, Sir Alex Ferguson, and Wenger. This milestone will also see him surpass the tenure of his mentor, Pep Guardiola, who spent exactly ten seasons at Manchester City.
In addition to Arteta, his coaching staff have agreed to extend their respective contracts on a matching timeline. While the exact financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, the extension cements Arteta’s place among the elite earners in global football, specifically securing his position as the Premier League’s highest-paid manager.
The extension had been widely anticipated, and few would dispute its merit following Arteta’s historic triumph in leading Arsenal to their first Premier League title in 22 years last season. Taking over a squad that consistently struggled to qualify for the Champions League, the 44-year-old has transformed the Gunners into a perennial powerhouse. The team reached the final of Europe’s premier club competition, ultimately falling short on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain.
“It is a profound privilege to commit my future to this club and to continue collaborating with exceptional individuals who are entirely dedicated to Arsenal’s success,” Arteta stated. “Arsenal is a unique institution, defined by its character and the deep connection it fosters. I feel incredibly fortunate that our shared journey is set to continue.”
“We have already forged an unbreakable bond and created memories that will endure a lifetime, and the thrilling reality is that this is merely the beginning of what we can accomplish together. I am deeply grateful to Stan and Josh Kroenke for their unwavering trust and support, and I feel honoured to lead this club during such a pivotal era in its 140-year history.”
“This represents an immensely proud moment for me and my family. I feel the love and respect from our incredible supporters, and we reciprocate those feelings wholeheartedly.”

Speaking at the Leaders Week London sports industry conference, Arsenal CEO Richard Garlick echoed Arteta’s sentiment, emphasizing that last season’s title victory is just the beginning of a new era. “This is a genuine partnership with Mikel. His long-term commitment combined with the club’s reciprocal long-term investment strengthens our alignment significantly,” Garlick said.
“To be completely honest, it provides us with a distinct competitive advantage. Looking at the rest of the Premier League, Mikel stands as the only current manager who has won the title. When examining our traditional top-six rivals, they have all undergone managerial transitions within the last twelve months, whereas we have a leader who has been with us for a substantial period.”
“He has been afforded the time to build and develop a squad, and that is where the excitement lies. We see the strong foundation established, and we are poised to build upon it. This is not the conclusion, but rather an incredibly thrilling beginning for us.”
Garlick emphasized that the club has no intention of standing still in their pursuit of further silverware. “We want to build upon the confidence that last season’s success has generated. Our ambition is to dominate football for years to come, and we are in an exceptionally strong position to achieve that. This mindset requires difficult decisions, whether it involves reshaping the squad in the transfer window by moving on players who were successful last season, restructuring staff, or making targeted investments in specific areas while prioritizing others.”
“We must continuously find that extra edge that keeps us ahead, and we must be bold. It would be easy to rest on our laurels and assume last year’s success guarantees future triumphs, but when you are the champions, everyone targets you and seeks to defeat you. We must seize every opportunity, leverage our advantages, and constantly push forward. ‘Always forward’ remains one of Arsenal’s core mottos.”
Under Arteta’s guidance, Arsenal has achieved a remarkable win percentage of 62.05, the highest of any permanent manager in the club’s history, alongside an average of 2.1 points per game. Should he secure 22 more victories, he will cement his place as the second-most successful manager in terms of total wins in Arsenal’s history, still trailing only the legendary Arsene Wenger.
The Kroenke family released a joint statement expressing their enthusiasm for the future: “It has been an extraordinary journey thus far, and we are incredibly excited about what lies ahead in this special relationship. Last season marked a historic moment in Arsenal’s history, creating lifelong memories, and we are determined to continue building on that legacy for years to come.”
“We share a profound bond with Mikel. We are immensely proud of everything we have achieved since his return to the club in 2019. He possesses a deep understanding of Arsenal’s core values, carrying them close to his heart. He truly comprehends the significance of this club to everyone connected with it and remains fully committed to building upon our shared achievements.”
