Warning: Mild SPOILERS lie ahead for Carrie!Mike Flanagan has returned to Stephen King’s universe for Prime Video’s Carrie, bringing a familiar face along for the ride. The series reunites Flanagan with several actors from his previous projects, including Midnight Mass‘s Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White, The Life of Chuck‘s Matthew Lillard as Principal Henry Grayle, Kate Siegel as the enigmatic Adelaide, Oculus‘ Katee Sackhoff, and Rahul Kohli as teacher Seth Peist. Across eight episodes, the adaptation expands significantly on King’s novel, particularly exploring the broader history of women who share Carrie’s telekinetic abilities.
In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley ahead of the premiere, Flanagan detailed the surprise appearance by Mark Hamill in the sixth episode. The creator recalled approaching the Star Wars veteran—whom he calls “a friend” after two prior collaborations—with an offer for a single scene. Hamill agreed enthusiastically with one condition: he wanted to be “somewhat unrecognizable” and for the cameo not to be “a big deal.”
Mike Flanagan: It was like, “We can do that.” He’s one of my favorite humans. They say don’t meet your heroes in this business, and it’s true, but I think the exception to that is Mark Hamill, who has always, always, in my experience, just been everything you want him to be and more. And it was really neat. So much of our crew on this show also worked on the Fall of the House of Usher with Mark. And so when he came back, even for half a day, there were so many people happy to see him again. It’s a little homecoming.

Hamill appears in the opening of episode 6, one of several flashbacks depicting women throughout history who possess the “TK gene.” He portrays Greg McMurray, a con artist posing as a celebrity psychic named Damon Nostra. McMurray builds a following through a telephone hotline and television show before fading into obscurity running a small shop. His fraud is exposed when a young woman struggling with emerging psychic powers seeks his guidance, discovers his deception, and inflicts grievous self-harm in response.
This marks the third collaboration between Flanagan and Hamill. Their partnership began with The Fall of the House of Usher, a project Hamill joined after his wife—typically averse to horror—was captivated by the Edgar Allan Poe-inspired scripts. Hamill later credited the experience with reinvigorating his acting career, leading to a reunion on King’s The Life of Chuck.
Notably, Carrie also represents Hamill’s third Stephen King adaptation in recent years. He earned strong reviews as the villainous Major in the long-awaited film version of The Long Walk. With Flanagan and Hamill clearly eager to continue working together, future collaborations seem likely—potentially including Flanagan’s upcoming King adaptations The Mist and The Dark Tower.
Carrie is now streaming on Prime Video.
