Bhuvneshwar Kumar‘s return to the Indian team has sparked intense debate over whether the veteran pacer can successfully transition back into the One Day International (ODI) setup. The 36-year-old has been recalled to India’s T20I squad for the upcoming five-match series against New Zealand, beginning October 22, marking his first international appearance in four years. His stellar IPL 2026 campaign with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he secured 28 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 7.95, played a pivotal role in earning the recall. With the 2027 ODI World Cup scheduled to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, Bhuvneshwar has a prime opportunity to re-establish himself in the selectors’ plans.
Umesh Yadav Backs Bhuvneshwar for ODI World Cup 2027
Former India pacer Umesh Yadav has expressed strong confidence in Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s candidacy for the 2027 ODI World Cup, citing his recent form and the bowling conditions expected at the tournament.
Speaking to SportsNext, Umesh highlighted Bhuvneshwar’s consistent IPL performances and explained why his bowling style is well-suited for South African conditions. Known for his ability to move the ball in the air and extract significant assistance from helpful pitches, the veteran pacer’s skill set aligns perfectly with the demands of the venue.
“Considering the way Bhuvneshwar Kumar has performed, he definitely deserves a spot. He has consistently delivered in the IPL across various seasons. On the wickets in South Africa, there is no doubt that you get both bounce and swing, making him a highly valuable option,” Umesh stated.
Ultimately, Bhuvneshwar’s performance during the New Zealand tour could prove decisive. A standout comeback, showcasing his ball-swinging ability and peak physical fitness, would significantly bolster his case for inclusion in India’s ODI strategy.
Umesh Yadav’s Ideal Bowling Attack for the 2027 World Cup
Umesh also shared his preferred pace attack for India’s campaign at the 2027 ODI World Cup. In a notable selection, he included Bhuvneshwar alongside elite bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, while also highlighting Prasidh Krishna and Arshdeep Singh as strong contenders.
“Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna. Since the wickets will be bouncy, Prasidh Krishna’s natural bounce and pace will be incredibly useful on those surfaces,” Umesh added.
He also emphasized the importance of including a left-arm fast bowler in the squad, backing Arshdeep Singh’s extensive experience as a major advantage.
“Having a left-arm fast bowler in the team is highly beneficial. Arshdeep Singh has been continuously traveling with the team for years, attending every tour and major tournament. His extensive experience swinging the ball gives him a strong chance of making the squad,” the former pacer concluded.
