Nicolas Maduro, the former president of Venezuela, and his wife Cilia Flores have been indicted in a New York federal court on charges of conspiring to torture political opponents as part of a campaign to cling to power.
The superseding indictment, filed in Manhattan on Thursday, introduces a count of conspiracy to commit torture alongside the drug trafficking charges the couple already faces.
Both Maduro and Flores have denied the drug-related accusations and remain in custody at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center. A trial date has been set for June 1.
The latest charges deepen an existing federal case alleging that Maduro collaborated with narcotics cartels to funnel cocaine from Venezuela toward the United States.
