[Title]Philadelphia Officer Killed in Shotgun Witness; Partner Suffers Severe Injuries
In Saturday morning West Philadelphia, a Philadelphia police officer was fatally shot and a partner critically wounded when responding to reports of an actively armed individual, authorities confirmed.
Officer Shane Seiber, 40, a ten‑year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department, was killed early Saturday. His colleague was wounded in the incident and was rushed to treatment.
Both officers were transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where the surviving participant underwent emergency surgery. According to Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel, the officer remained in stable condition following the injury.
Authorities announced that the suspect, identified as Eric Lewis, 35, by the Philadelphia Inquirer, had been placed in custody related to the shooting.
Governor Josh Shapiro confirmed that he directed state flag protocol to fly at half‑mast in tribute to Officer Seiber. He is survived by his wife and two children—a son aged seven and a daughter aged three.
Seiber represents at least the 376th officer in Philadelphia history to perish while on duty since 1851, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page, which commemorates U.S. law enforcement personnel who fall in service. He ranks as the 129th officer among those who have lost their lives due to gunfire, the memorial noted.
