The alleged murder and dismemberment of socialite Abby Choi Tin-fung, which authorities say originated from a dispute over a luxury apartment, continues to hold Hong Kong in its grip. The trial regarding the death of the 28-year-old has now entered its second week.
Choi’s former husband, Alex Kwong Kong-chi, 31, and his older brother, Anthony Kwong Kong-kit, 35, have pleaded guilty to charges of preventing the lawful burial of her body. Their father, Kwong Kau, 68, has entered a not guilty plea to the same charge, while all three men maintain their innocence regarding Choi’s murder.
Although Hong Kong is widely regarded as one of the safest urban centers globally, the city has nevertheless been the site of numerous sensational and gruesome criminal cases.
1. Plaza Hollywood stabbings (2023)
Only months after the alleged killing of Choi, two women were stabbed to death during a frenzied knife assault at the Plaza Hollywood shopping centre in Diamond Hill. The suspect was a man suffering from severe mental illness.
The unprovoked violence, which was recorded on CCTV and circulated extensively online, raised fresh safety concerns at a time when the city was still recovering from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
