[Suresh Raina Supports Mohammed Shami’s Possible Reunion with India’s Fast Bowling Unit] Mohammed Shami’s potential return to the Indian cricket team has sparked widespread discussion, with former India opener Suresh Raina lending his support to the seasoned pacer’s chance at a comeback. With Bhuvneshwar Kumar reinstated in India’s T20I squad for the New Zealand tour, Raina anticipates that Shami could also join the national lineup.
Shami has maintained a steady presence in domestic cricket despite not representing India since the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy final against New Zealand. His form across Ranji, Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq Ali competitions keeps him in sight of an overseas selection, even though official confirmations have yet to materialize.
At the launch of the Indian Soft Ball Cricket League jersey event, Raina offered his perspective on Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s reintegration and asked whether Shami might follow suit.
Raina praised Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s dedication and discipline, underscoring the rigorous training the veteran fast bowler endured to retain his prime condition and qualify again. He further expressed confidence that Shami would be a fitting candidate to rejoin the Indian side.
“Absolutely, I think he (Mohammed Shami) has done well and played good domestic cricket too. Now it is Bhuvi’s turn, aur Shami bhi aa rahe hain pichhe pichhe, tension mat lijiye.”
Raina’s comments have intensified the discourse around Shami’s future international engagements. Nonetheless, his remarks represent his personal viewpoint, and the BCCI has not issued an official declaration concerning the pacer’s prospective return.
Shami last played for India in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy final versus New Zealand, and most recently featured in a Test match during the World Test Championship final against Australia in June 2023.
In the 2025‑26 season Shami recorded 37 wickets across seven Ranji Trophy games, along with notable contributions in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Can Mohammed Shami return before the 2027 World Cup?
With the 2027 ODIs on the horizon, India faces the task of selecting its pace‑bowling complement. Shami’s experience from higher‑level tournaments could be decisive, provided his form holds and he satisfies the BCCI’s fitness protocols.
India’s forthcoming international tours could provide an opportunity for selectors to gauge fast‑bowling depth, encompassing both seasoned veterans and emerging talents. Shami’s impressive home performances boost his credentials, yet his eventual selection rests on tactical needs and the committee’s assessment.
Until now, the Bengal pacer must continue producing reliable results and staying fit as he pursues another chance to wear the Indian color jacket.
