Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has urged residents along the Pacific coast to remain indoors as Hurricane Simon’s powerful winds and heavy rains impact coastal communities.
As of Sunday, the storm’s eye was tracking just offshore of Jalisco state, with sustained winds of at least 240 km/h (150 mph).
Torrential rain has already hit residents between the Sierra Madre mountains and the Pacific coast, prompting warnings of potential mudslides in hilly and mountainous areas.
Simon intensified to Category 4 on Saturday, part of an unusually active Pacific hurricane season.
“With the approaching impact of Category 4 Hurricane Simon, we urge residents of coastal municipalities in Jalisco, Colima, Nayarit and Michoacan to remain sheltered until authorities officially declare that the danger has passed,” Sheinbaum wrote on X on Sunday.
In a midday advisory, the U.S. National Hurricane Center warned that Simon could bring an additional 8 to 16 inches (20–41 cm) of rain to southwestern Mexico.
Precipitation totals of up to 76 cm (30 inches) were forecast for parts of Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco through Monday.
It remains uncertain whether the storm will make landfall, but the highest risk of a direct hit is currently focused on Cabo Corrientes, a town situated on a cape in Jalisco that juts into the Pacific.
Mexico’s National Civil Protection Coordination (CNPC) placed 28 municipalities in Jalisco and Colima under its highest cyclone alert level, while an additional 93 municipalities were placed under a high alert, according to official bulletins.
Classes have been suspended across the affected zones, and evacuation efforts are underway.
Businesses in popular tourist hubs such as Puerto Vallarta have boarded up windows and positioned sandbags at entrances as the storm draws nearer.
Governor Pablo Navarro of Jalisco warned that the powerful hurricane is generating high‑risk marine conditions along the coastline, with waves up to eight metres (26 feet) high.
On Sunday he also posted a video on social media showing the surge flooding sidewalks and waterways.
“Here is the current state of Jalisco’s beaches this morning – from Barra de Navidad to Puerto Vallarta – as Hurricane Simon passes through,” he captioned the video.
“I urge everyone to follow official guidance, take necessary precautions and avoid putting themselves in danger. The safety of Jalisco’s families is our top priority.”
