Kurt Campbell, a veteran U.S. diplomat and strategist, has spent more than a decade shaping Washington’s approach to China and the Indo-Pacific.
From 2021 to 2024, he served as White House coordinator for Indo-Pacific affairs, and from 2024 to 2025 as U.S. deputy secretary of state. Previously, from 2009 to 2013, he was assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs and a key architect of the Obama administration’s ‘pivot to Asia’.
Frequently dubbed the Biden administration’s ‘Asia tsar,’ Campbell played a pivotal role in developing the Quad and championing the ‘small yard, high fence’ strategy for technology competition. A former U.S. Navy officer and Harvard professor, he co-founded the Centre for a New American Security and now serves as chairman and co-founder of The Asia Group, a Washington-based strategic advisory firm.
