England are finalising a significant addition to their Test coaching structure as Stephen Fleming assembles his support staff ahead of the upcoming series against South Africa in December. The former New Zealand captain is preparing for his first assignment in charge of the red-ball side, with the team poised to welcome a highly experienced bowling coach.
The appointment is expected to be confirmed on Monday alongside the announcement of England’s latest round of central contracts. This move forms part of a broader restructuring of the coaching hierarchy, with Brendon McCullum remaining in his role overseeing the white-ball teams.
Experienced bowling coach joins England
Eric Simons is set to join the England set-up as Test bowling coach, bringing a wealth of international and franchise experience to the role. The 64-year-old is a long-standing associate of Fleming, having previously collaborated at the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. The pair have also worked together at the Joburg Super Kings in the SA20 and Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket.
Simons previously served as South Africa’s head coach from 2002 to 2004 and later held the position of bowling coach for India. As a player, he represented South Africa in 23 one-day internationals during 1994 and 1995. His arrival provides Fleming with a seasoned lieutenant as England prepare for the next phase of their Test programme.
England continue to reshape coaching staff
England have utilised a rotation of fast-bowling consultants in recent years, including James Anderson, David Saker and Tim Southee, during McCullum’s tenure as Test head coach. Saker is currently working with the side during the ongoing one-day tri-series in Pakistan, alongside Jeetan Patel, Mike Yardy and Carl Hopkinson.
Meanwhile, Kevin Pietersen has been appointed as a batting consultant for the white-ball teams ahead of the 50-over World Cup in southern Africa. He is expected to link up with the squad for the tours of Australia and South Africa. The future of Marcus Trescothick with the Test side remains uncertain following his interim spell in charge during the series against Pakistan.
