Sydney-based Islamic community center leader Abu Hamza, also known as Samir Mohtadi, has denied any association with the Omani co-pilot suspected of attempting to hijack a flydubai flight. In a social media post late Monday, the imam stated he “never met” Hamam Al-Hammami and insisted he has “consistently preached peace” throughout his career.
The co-pilot, currently in UAE custody, is accused of being inspired by Al-Qaeda’s September 11, 2001 suicide attacks and of carrying out the attempt “with the aim of causing the greatest possible loss of life,” according to Emirati prosecutor findings released last week.
Prosecutors allege the radicalization occurred while the suspect was studying in Australia, where he consumed extremist literature and online content glorifying terrorist organizations and suicide attacks.
The prosecution further claims the suspect was acquainted in Australia with an organization known as “My Center,” managed by Lebanese national Abu Hamza. However, neither “My Center” nor Abu Hamza face any criminal allegations.
In his statement, Abu Hamza denied ever having hosted or encountered the co-pilot, adding that relevant authorities should have verified these claims before publishing the information. He reiterated that his center “unequivocally rejects violence in all its forms.”
Australian police and intelligence agencies are reportedly investigating the co-pilot’s connections to the country. Meanwhile, New Zealand police confirmed the suspect spent time in the country on a six-month student visa, during which he completed part of his flight training, as noted by national broadcaster RNZ.
