Hong Kong travel agencies and border retailers have capitalised on the reopening of the refurbished Huanggang Port, as thousands of visitors streamed through the control point. Special tours were on offer and shopkeepers reported brisk business, though crowd management measures slightly dampened trading activity at the checkpoint entrance.
Industry agents indicate the port’s 24-hour joint clearance arrangements could provide a significant boost to cross-border tourism, supporting wider efforts to enhance connectivity across the Greater Bay Area.
Tour groups organised by Hong Kong travel firm Big Line Holiday were among the first visitors to use the upgraded checkpoint on Monday morning. To avoid overwhelming the new facility, the agency staggered its groups across different time slots.
Chan Yin-ping, the agency’s chairwoman, said approximately 1,000 people had joined the tours, with 20 groups scheduled between 10am and 1pm. Plans for additional tours are yet to be confirmed, pending a smooth inaugural period.
