Lufthansa Group is strengthening its Japan presence for 2027, reinstating the Frankfurt‑Nagoya route and launching a daily service between Frankfurt and Tokyo‑Narita in response to rising demand.
The group’s carriers – Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, SWISS and ITA Airways – will provide up to 50 flights per week next summer to four Japanese airports: Tokyo‑Haneda, Tokyo‑Narita, Osaka and Nagoya.
The expansion follows a record year in 2025, when Japan welcomed 42.7 million international visitors, a 15.8 % increase over 2024, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization.
Visitor numbers from several European markets continued to rise in 2026. Between January and August, Japan recorded 27.6 million international arrivals, down 2.7 % compared with the same period in 2025. However, arrivals from Germany grew 5.6 % to 281,500, while those from the United Kingdom increased 5.8 % to 364,800. France, Italy and Spain also reported growth.
Frankfurt‑Nagoya service resumes in March
Lufthansa’s seasonal Frankfurt‑Nagoya flight will restart on 29 March 2027, operating three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Outbound departures leave Frankfurt at 2:10 pm and arrive in Nagoya at 9:35 am the following day. Return flights depart Nagoya at 11:30 am and land in Frankfurt at 6:30 pm. All times are local.
Nagoya, located in Aichi Prefecture, is a major industrial hub with strong ties to the automotive sector. For leisure travellers, the city offers samurai heritage and easy access to destinations such as Kyoto.
Passengers departing from Nagoya can connect via Frankfurt to destinations across Europe and South America.
Daily service to Tokyo‑Narita
A new daily seasonal service between Frankfurt and Tokyo‑Narita will begin on 28 March 2027, complementing Lufthansa’s existing daily flights to Tokyo‑Haneda from Frankfurt and Munich.
The outbound flight leaves Frankfurt at 1:45 pm, arriving in Narita at 9:30 am the next day. The return departs Narita at 11:20 am and reaches Frankfurt at 6:40 pm.
Both the Nagoya and Narita routes will be operated with Boeing 787‑9 aircraft featuring Lufthansa’s Allegris cabin, which provides 28 business‑class seats, 28 premium‑economy seats and 231 economy seats.
“Japan is a key market for the Lufthansa Group, and we are pleased to reinforce our presence with added capacity and the resumption of flights to Nagoya,” said Dieter Vranckx, the group’s chief commercial officer.
“Together with our expanded Tokyo services, these investments give customers more travel options and support the continued diversification of our intercontinental network.”
SWISS will also increase its Japan offering, providing up to seven weekly flights between Zurich and Tokyo‑Narita during summer 2027.
