BERLIN — German authorities temporarily closed Nuremberg Airport and deployed fighter jets to escort a passenger aircraft from Greece after an in‑flight emergency was reported on Tuesday, according to the dpa news agency.
Police sealed off Nuremberg Airport in southern Germany and opened an investigation, but the commercial flight landed safely from the Greek island of Corfu, after which authorities gave an all‑clear, the agency reported.
Specifics of the emergency call were not yet available. Earlier that day, officials reported a possible drone sighting at the airport.
An airport spokesperson said six flights were delayed and two inbound flights were diverted to other airports as a precaution.
Across Europe, authorities have intensified aerial surveillance in recent weeks amid a rise in mostly unexplained drone incidents and growing concerns about Russian activities as Moscow’s war in Ukraine continues.
The German government last month accused Russia of an attempted attack on Leipzig/Halle Airport in August, in which a drone loaded with explosives was used, and announced the closure of a Russian consulate, among other measures.
Russian President Vladimir Putin denied Berlin’s allegations.
Western officials have repeatedly accused Moscow of conducting a campaign of sabotage and disruption aimed at weakening support for Ukraine and destabilising European countries.
