Aiden Markram’s resilient 75 in the fourth innings served as one of the few positives, spanning nearly six hours before he finally edged Mitchell Starc to wicketkeeper Alex Carey during the afternoon session.
David Bedingham also appeared comfortable in his new number three position, though he was among those unable to convert promising starts after reaching 49 and 46.
The defeat did not rest solely on the batters, however.
Bavuma, recording his first loss as captain in this match, allowed the contest to drift on day two as Australia extended their total from 124-6 to 390 not out.
Matthew Renshaw played magnificently for his 190, yet he was rarely challenged as he casually rotated the strike and protected Nathan Lyon through a 134-run ninth-wicket stand.
While measuring South Africa against Australia’s fearsome attack is arguably unfair, the Proteas lacked the relentless pressure their counterparts maintained throughout.
Anrich Nortje was impressive, claiming four wickets in his first Test since March 2023. His second spell proved quicker than his first, injecting pace and hostility, including a bouncer that clipped Steve Smith on the helmet on day four.
Conversely, Mulder offered little following his new-ball spells, while Marco Jansen remained quiet after dismissing Nic Maddinson and Steve Smith on day one.
The return from injury of premier quick Kagiso Rabada, seen bowling during lunch on day five, cannot arrive soon enough.
Spinners Simon Harmer and Keshav Maharaj did not escape coach Anthony Conrad’s scrutiny either.
“Anrich’s return was phenomenal and really pleasing,” Conrad said.
“If we were brutally honest, our spinners were not as sharp as they normally are.”
With the second Test beginning in just five days in Gqeberha, South Africa must hope this fixture has shaken off the rust.
The alternative takeaway, however, would be far more concerning.
