FTR and the Motor City Machine Guns are set to settle their rivalry in a high-stakes Best-of-Five Series launching at AEW WrestleDream 2026.
The two elite tag teams confronted each other during the October 14 episode of AEW Dynamite, setting the stage for a rivalry that could determine the premier tag team in AEW’s competitive division.
AEW Confirms WrestleDream Opener for FTR vs. Motor City Machine Guns
During this week’s Dynamite, the segment opened with Tony Schiavone introducing FTR along with their manager, Stokely Hathaway. Following the introductions, Harwood seized the microphone to express the significance of reclaiming tag team gold.
Harwood emphasized that regaining championship status was his primary objective. He then issued a callout to The Young Bucks, seeking another opportunity to establish himself and Cash Wheeler as the top contenders for the World Tag Team Championship.
However, Harwood didn’t receive the response he anticipated. Instead, the Motor City Machine Guns stepped forward with a different challenge entirely.
Chris Sabin acknowledged FTR’s decorated history but argued that past accomplishments didn’t automatically crown a team as the best in today’s division. Sabin highlighted the strength of AEW’s tag team landscape and declared that he and Shelley were ready to prove their superiority. The MCMG challenged FTR to settle the debate once and for all inside the ring.
Shelley escalated the tension by referencing FTR’s storied rivalry with The Young Bucks. The repeated battles between these teams had solidified FTR’s reputation as one of AEW’s premier tag teams.
Shelley noted that FTR had defeated The Young Bucks three times in five encounters. He posed the question: what would it mean if the MCMG could achieve the same success against Harwood and Wheeler?
His proposition was that a Best-of-Five Series would provide both teams with multiple opportunities to demonstrate their prowess, rather than relying on a single decisive matchup.
Shelley formally proposed the series and even suggested starting the first match immediately on Dynamite. However, Hathaway declined to initiate the series right then, arguing that such a significant matchup deserved a grander stage. He accepted the Best-of-Five challenge and announced that the opening contest would take place at WrestleDream 2026.
The segment concluded with both teams exchanging handshakes, signaling mutual respect ahead of their upcoming battles. Their first match is scheduled for Saturday, October 17.
