Torreense has made history as the first Portuguese second-division club to qualify for Europe by winning the Taca de Portugal, a feat not seen since Beira-Mar’s participation in the 1999-2000 Uefa Cup while still in the top flight. This remarkable achievement has set the stage for their upcoming clash against Sunderland, marking a fairytale run for the underdogs.
Jose Delgado, a Portuguese football journalist and former Benfica goalkeeper, emphasized the significance of the moment: “The Portuguese Cup has been contested since 1938, and this is the first time a second-division team has claimed victory. Defeating giants like Sporting in the final was a huge surprise, and for the city of Torreense, it’s an incredibly special occasion.”
Following their upset victory over Lillestrom in the Europa League, Torreense has already surpassed expectations, securing three points in a campaign many thought would be fruitless. Delgado added, “I initially believed Torreense might finish the group with no points, but they’ve proven otherwise. This is something that may never happen again in Portuguese football, yet here they are.”
With Portugal ranked outside the top five leagues in UEFA, clubs in European competitions carry the weight of boosting national ranking points. Delgado noted, “While Torreense’s cup win was celebrated, there were concerns about their European performance. However, their win against Lillestrom was a delightful surprise, embodying a fairytale for this small club.”
