[Novaya Gazeta Editor Seriously Detained After Investigative Committee Seizure]
The chief editor at Russia’s independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta, Sergei Sokolov, has been detained and taken to Moscow’s Investigative Committee, the paper announced on Thursday.
Novaya Gazeta, traditionally regarded as a center for Russian independent journalism, is designated a “foreign agent” by contemporary Russian authorities.
“Sergei Sokolov, editor‑in‑chief of Novaya Gazeta, is being transferred to the Investigative Committee following a home search,” the newspaper posted on social media.
According to Novaya Gazeta, the journalist went missing from office around midday Thursday, shortly before his scheduled editorial meeting.
The outlet confirmed that communications with its editor had ceased and that legal representation was en route to Sokolov.
It added that the authorities had conducted a search of his residence while noting that the incident stems from a broader crackdown, which has pushed many independent reporters into exile.
