Keith Thurman has expressed skepticism about Devin Haney’s ability to compete at the highest level against Shakur Stevenson in a potential 145-pound catchweight bout.
The two elite fighters are reportedly in advanced talks for a clash, with initial proposals targeting November 28 in Atlanta. However, financial disagreements may push the event to a later date.
Stevenson, who secured a dominant unanimous decision over Teofimo Lopez earlier this year, is widely regarded as the favorite. His achievement of becoming a four-division champion at 29 underscores his pedigree.
Haney, meanwhile, enters the conversation as the larger competitor, having recently won the WBO welterweight title against Brian Norman Jr. Despite his size advantage, Thurman argues that Haney lacks the necessary fighting spirit.
“[It’s] not even just the defence [of Stevenson, but also] the speed. Speed kills.
“I favour Shakur in that matchup, because I’ve never seen one ounce of dog [in Haney], and I don’t know if a non-dog will be able to beat a Shakur.”
However, Haney’s past performances suggest otherwise. His resilience in overcoming three knockdowns against Ryan Garcia and a challenging fight with Jorge Linares demonstrates his toughness under pressure.
