Four individuals, including three children, have died in a shooting at an elementary school in Oregon, as reported by law enforcement to CBS and CNN.
The incident occurred on Thursday at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, roughly 160 km (100 miles) southeast of Portland.
Police confirmed the shooter is deceased, though it remains uncertain if he is counted among the four fatalities reported.
Sheila Miller, communications manager for the Bend Police Department, said they are systematically clearing each room and evacuating everyone present. She described the event as devastating and something the community never wishes to experience.
Miller added that the call reporting a shot fired into a vehicle outside the school was received at 12:59 p.m. local time (19:59 GMT), and officers arrived on scene within minutes.
The suspect was shot and killed shortly thereafter; Miller said she was unsure whether police or a civilian had subdued the alleged assailant.
The number and condition of the injured have not yet been determined.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced on social media that the agency was present to assist local law enforcement with the investigation.
He added that all necessary resources would be provided.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek said she is closely monitoring the situation.
Senator Jeff Merkley, representing Oregon in the U.S. Senate, offered his condolences following the shooting.
He stated, “My heart is with the Bend community and all students and families affected. No one should have to fear violence in schools,” in a post on the social media platform X.
