Rory McIlroy carded a two-under 70 in Thursday’s opening round of the DP World India Championship, but could only complete four holes of his second round on Friday before play was suspended due to deteriorating light conditions in New Delhi.
The interruption followed torrential rain on Thursday that caused a five-hour delay to the opening round. Play was halted just before 6pm local time on Friday, with the second round scheduled to resume at 6.45am on Saturday.
McIlroy, who opened his second round with an eagle before play was stopped, sits four shots behind the clubhouse lead at four under par. The Northern Irishman is competing for a record-equaling eighth Race to Dubai title.
Joost Luiten, Angel Hidalgo, and Adrian Meronk were among those who managed to complete their second rounds on Friday, all finishing at eight under par to share the lead. Belgian Thomas Detry also remains at eight under through six holes of his second round, currently three under for the day.
England’s Eddie Pepperell carded a six-under 66 and Todd Clements finished one shot back at seven under, both securing their places in the clubhouse before visibility declined. Eugenio Chacarra sits at seven under through five holes as he continues his bid to move up the Race to Dubai rankings, where he currently holds second place.
Robert MacIntyre and defending champion Tommy Fleetwood are both four under overall, each playing five and four holes respectively in their second rounds. McIlroy entered this penultimate event in third place in the DP World Tour standings.
Leader Patrick Reed completed his second round at three under, recovering from an early double-bogey at the fourth hole to finish even par overall.
