< p>NEW DELHI: The founder of India’s Community Justice Party (CJP), Abhijeet Dipke, was released from custody on Saturday after a brief detention period linked to a government crackdown on protests against electoral authorities.
Dipke, aged 31, was taken into custody on Friday while traveling to join a rally organized by the CJP protest movement in the capital’s central Connaught Place district.
After several hours in police custody, Dipke emerged from a detention center on Saturday afternoon, where he greeted media representatives with a wave and a thumbs-up before being escorted away. An AFP photographer captured these moments.
“Abhijeet Dipke has been released,” stated Ratna Singh, the CJP’s legal affairs chief, on social media.
While opposition parties and CJP activists have continued to resist the security operations, demanding the resignation of the Chief Electoral Commissioner following claims of voter roll manipulation to benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, the electoral authority has denied any wrongdoing.
Two other senior CJP leaders, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das, were also arrested on October 14 after attempting entry into Jantar Mantar, a longstanding protest site now officially prohibited for demonstrations. Those detainees remain in custody pending inquiry.
Bharatiya Janata Party members have long accused the election body of illegally adding undocumented Muslim migrants from Bangladesh to electoral registers. Critics counter that the Modi government has gradually constrained civil liberties over its tenure, citing harassment of journalists, non‑governmental organizations, and political dissenters—a position the government refutes.
