The Persian Gulf coast in Iran witnessed an unusual surge of activity this week as local fishermen abandoned their traditional fishing methods to venture into the waters of the Strait of Hormuz using small motorboats and rescue dinghies, driven by the opportunity to collect valuable cargo floating on the surface.
According to a report by The Telegraph, a container ship named “GFS Pride” sank on October 14 following an onboard fire, causing a massive shipment of brand-new iPhones, luxury French perfumes, and other consumer goods to spill into the sea.
Social media videos depict numerous local fishermen maneuvering between semi-submerged containers, extracting boxes directly from the water, with one small boat even attempting to tow a fully loaded shipping container. Singapore authorities, where the vessel is registered, confirmed the ship sank during the fire, though all 21 crew members were safely evacuated. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, however, alleges the vessel entered an unauthorized and hazardous lane, striking a naval mine, resulting in the sinking of over 2,500 containers. This marks the third vessel lost in the region since hostilities began in late February.
The incident underscores a sharp increase in IRGC activity in the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz. Iranian armed forces spokesperson Gen. Mohammad Akraminia recently stated that the reopening of the strait hinges on a full U.S. military withdrawal from the area, warning that Iranian forces would forcibly remove American troops if they remain. He emphasized that foreign presence undermines regional maritime security and urged shipowners to use only Iranian-supervised corridors for safety.
The region continues to experience intense maritime and land operations. The Iranian Navy reported monitoring a fire that erupted on an oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman after it entered a “prohibited zone” and disabled its tracking systems. Meanwhile, Houthi forces in Yemen expanded their siege of Taiz, while the Saudi-led coalition successfully intercepted and destroyed ballistic missiles and drones targeting Riyadh and Red Sea ports.
