France experienced a wave of volatility over the weekend as protests centered on the rising cost of living and deteriorating school conditions devolved into violent riots.
The French government reported a significant “escalation in violence,” resulting in at least 1,200 arrests as demonstrators smashed shopfronts and looted various stores.
By Sunday morning, business owners began the arduous task of cleaning up the debris; some reported total losses in stolen goods and property damage reaching €100,000 (£85,000).
The BBC’s James Waterhouse provides a report from the streets of Paris, documenting the aftermath outside the damaged buildings.
